Adam, Satan, Jesus, and Immanuel — The 4 Realms of Man’s Existence
This is the third part in a series of five articles on the Messiah’s names, Jesus and Immanuel.” Why was Christ given these two names and what it really means to us? Read the first and the second parts, if you haven’t.
I have shared in the previous issue how God administers our salvation in stages. Those stages correspond to the realms we will see in this article. Learn how the two names given to the Messiah relate to the realms wherein we exist before God.
The realms of our existence
There are four realms where one may find himself existing in this earthly life before his final appointment with his maker, God.
-
Neutral/Common Realm in Old Creation — In Adam
-
Realm of Sin — In Satan, leading to Eternal Death
-
Neutral/Common Realm in New Creation— In Christ Jesus
-
Realm of the Spirit — In Christ Immanuel, leading to Eternal Life
Yes, it is appointed unto all men once to die, but afterward comes the judgment (Hebrews 9:27). Therefore, take heed to the words of Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell (cf. Matthew 10:28).
A question for you. At this point in your life, which realm are you in?
In this post, we will look at the first man, Adam. Then turn our eyes upon Jesus Christ, the last Adam.
1. Neutral/Common Realm in Old Creation — In Adam
After the man was made or born, he exists in a neutral realm, which the bible calls “common” or in the book of Revelations referred to as “lukewarm.” He is a living soul, neither sinful nor holy. Just like a newborn babe.
However, he is not to remain in that state. Therefore God placed him in the garden where he is to be sustained and grow in order to be fruitful and multiply, under one specific commandment.
“And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.” (Genesis 2:16–17, MEV)
But he sinned by disobeying that specific command (Genesis 3:1-13).
“Therefore as sin came into the world through one man (through Adam’s disobedience) and death through sin, so death has spread to all men because all have sinned.” (Romans 5:12, MEV)
So, he fell into another realm, the realm of Sin.
2. Realm of Sin — In Satan, leading to Eternal Death
In this realm, man is destined to die. Like a criminal who is on death row, he helplessly waits for the judge to order his execution. He is powerless to reverse or divert the judgment for his sin, which is death. Not just death for his body but eternal death for his soul.
But God is merciful and prepared a way out. It is made available to all men under specific conditions if, again if, they repent and believe.
Do I have any pleasure in the death of the wicked, says the LORD God, but rather that he should turn from his ways and live? (Ezekiel 18:23, MEV)
The LORD is not slow concerning His promise, as some count slowness. But He is patient with us, because He does not want any to perish, but all to come to repentance. (2 Peter 3:9, MEV)
The next day John (the Baptist) saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. (John 1:29, MEV)
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life. (John 3:16)
For a man to be redeemed from the realm of sin, his sin must be atoned for. In the beginning, God made man in Adam free from sin. But Adam defiled that humanity.
To atone for that defilement, another man free from sin must shed blood and die. Not just any man, but a man without sin.
“For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins” (Matthew 26:28, MEV).
“And according to the law almost everything must be cleansed with blood; without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness” (Hebrews 9:22, MEV).
The Son of God is given to us for this purpose. That purpose is contained in the original name given, which was in Hebrew-Aramaic, Yah-oshua. “Yah” (the name of God) and “oshua” or “oshea” (from the Aramaic word “Yasha”) which means “to save” or “will save.” This name tells us Who sent Him and Why He sent Him.
Now, what I speak is controversial in Christianity because of the culture and traditions that influenced the inter-language translation of the Scriptures as well as the many names therein. But, bark at me if you will, I’ll say it anyway.
God’s name and purpose are neither in the transliterated English name JESUS nor in the transliterated Greek name, IESOUS where the name Jesus was transliterated from. This Greek name or the English name has no meaning in the language of the Hebrews or of the Jews to whom God spoke it.
When the apostle Peter (whose Hebrew name was Shim’on/Simeon) preached during that feast of Pentecost, he was preaching the name Yah-oshua as the only name in which man may be saved (Acts 2:38–39). Because that name bears the promised salvation of God whose name is YAH, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.
For more detail on the name of God, you may read this article.
Peter whose birth name was Shim’on (or Simeon) spoke Aramaic, and perhaps all the twelve disciples did. That’s why the Lord spoke to them in Aramaic as well. So when the Messiah met Shim’on (Peter), he renamed him Cephas (or Kephas), an Aramaic name. I’ll elaborate on this topic in another upcoming article.
Nevertheless, the Messiah’s name Yah’oshua bears the good news — YAH will save or Salvation of YAH.
So Christ in His name Yah’oshua (or Jesus, if you prefer), accomplished His first purpose of saving people from the sins they have committed.
Nothing of their work, but solely by the grace of God ministered to us by His Son.
Those who repent and believe (only those who believe) in His name become new again in God’s sight.
In this state, our iniquity is forgiven and our sins, God remembers no more (Jer. 31:34). Our past sins have been forgiven and blotted out through Jesus’ shed blood and death on the cross, and have been buried in Him in baptism (Romans 6:4).
We testify that when Jesus died on the cross, we in our life in Adam died with Him. We are baptized unto His death (Romans 6:3) and are now ready to be brought unto the resurrected life in the Spirit. Our baptism in water separates us from our sins that lead to death (Acts 2:38-41).
That is the entire work of Christ in His name, Yah-oshua (Jesus). By taking the form of a man, He identified Himself with Adam. Since the fall of Adam, because of sin, all men are to die. To save us from that death, Jesus although without sin, offered Himself to bear the sins of all men. By His shed blood and death on the cross, He redeemed us.
That redemption was made available to all of mankind. However, only those who would repent and believe in the Son of God can receive that redemption from their sinful state (the realm of sin).
By His shed blood and being identified with (baptized in) His death, men can be freed from their past sins. They are restored again to the neutral state, back in creation but not in Adam of the old creation but in Christ of the new creation.
If any man is in Christ, he is a new creation. All things passed away, all have become new (1 Corinthians 15:45).
In Christ, and by His atoning work alone can a man be restored back to the neutral realm when God gave him his first breath before his fall. Without life (for the former life died together and buried with Jesus) and therefore without sin.
3. Restored unto Neutral / Common Realm in New Creation — In Christ Jesus
Nevertheless, like the old Adam of the old creation, the new man of the new creation must receive the breath of God to be revived into a new person. So Jesus Christ after His resurrection ascended and presented Himself to His Father God. Then the Father after accepting His Son’s finished work, on the same day sent Him back to His disciples and breath into them His Spirit. This is the Comforter, the Holy Spirit that the Father promised. We read this record in John’s gospel about how He re-appeared to them.
19 On the evening of that first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst, and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 20 When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. The disciples were then glad when they saw the Lord.
21 So Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As My Father has sent Me, even so I send you.” 22 When He had said this, He breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive the sins of anyone, they are forgiven them. If you retain the sins of anyone, they are retained.” (John 20:19–23, MEV)
Apostle Paul confirmed this in his first epistle to the Corinthians.
So it is written, “The first man Adam was made a living soul.” The last Adam (referring to Christ) was made the life-giving Spirit. (1 Corinthians 15:45, MEV)
By believing that God raised Christ from the dead (Romans 10:9), the believer’s soul is regenerated by the breath of God the Spirit unto a new birth bringing him to another realm, still of Christ but in His other name, Immanuel, the Holy Spirit.
4. The realm of the Holy Spirit — Immanuel leading us to Holiness in God
This is the second part of our salvation accomplished by Christ in His name Immanuel, God with us.
Jesus spoke about this in chapter 14 of John’s gospel.
15 “If you love Me, keep My commandments. 16 I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Counselor, that He may be with you forever: 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, for it does not see Him, neither does it know Him. But you know Him, for He lives with you, and will be in you.
25 “I have spoken these things to you while I am still with you. 26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send “in My name,” will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you. 27 Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. (John 14:15–27, MEV)
The Holy Spirit who is sent by the Father in Christ’s name Immanuel is “God with us” (John 14:26 verse above). If we have been baptized in Him, meaning that we have received Him as the breath of God (John 20:22), as the life-giving Spirit (1 Cor. 15:45), then He will be in us, dwell in us, He is the Counselor who may be with us forever, our Immanuel (John 14:15-17).
Christ, our Immanuel (the Holy Spirit dwelling in us) is the fulfillment of the New Covenant promised in Jeremiah 31:33–34 in which He as the Spirit will be put within us and will be written in our hearts giving us the knowledge of God and will cause us to walk in His commandments (Ezek. 36:27).
In this realm, we do not need anyone to say “Know the Lord” for we will know Him (Jer. 31:34).
There we have the infilling of Immanuel, and with the outpouring of His power enabling us to observe and do the things He commanded us. To witness for Him and to disciple others to do the same.
Though we are still in the world physically, in this realm we are no longer of the world (John 17:15-18). We have been set apart, sanctified for God. We begin to seek the things which are above where Christ is, in God (Col. 3:1-4).
Our affections are set on the things of God which are eternal, not on things on earth, which will perish. We desire that which Christ desires and hate things that Christ hates. Our priorities shift to matters that are important to God.
In this realm, we abide in Christ, our Immanuel and we let His words abide in us to guide and govern us. He causes us to walk in His commandments and do things according to what He says. For “Why do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I say?” (Luke 6:46, MEV)
The road we tread is narrow and constricted in this realm, but it’s a blessed walk. If we stay on this path we will continue to grow and be transformed into the person of Christ for the Father’s glory. As God encouraged His servant Joshua prior to their entrance to the promised land with His word, we can trust in the same word to keep us.
7 Be strong and very courageous, in order to act carefully in accordance with all the law that My servant Moses commanded you. Do not turn aside from it to the right or the left, so that you may succeed wherever you go. 8 This Book of the Law must not depart from your mouth. Meditate on it day and night so that you may act carefully according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way successful, and you will be wise. 9 Have not I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:7–9)
The witness proving that we are in Christ, our Immanuel, and that God is with us is that we obey Him and keep His commandments.
We live by the Spirit and walk by the Spirit, that is by faith, absolutely by God’s word, and not by sight. According to the word of God and not according to the trends of the worldly environment while we wait for the Lord’s imminent return. The day when He will bring His faithful saints to their final realm which He prepared in glory.
“Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you since the foundation of the world.” (Matthew 25:34)
